Child Custody Law
LICENSED IN BOTH MISSOURI & KANSAS.
Having children means placing the needs of another person above your own. You make the best interests of your children the priority. This is the standard by which family law courts decide issues of child custody and visitation. If you are undergoing a divorce, a paternity action, or involved in a modification case, your children come first.
We put your children first, too. At The Law Offices of Cassandra L. Terhune, our focus is helping clients achieve their goals with respect to child custody and visitation matters. However the issue arises, we have experience resolving your problem.
UNDERSTANDING CHILD CUSTODY IN MISSOURI & KANSAS
Courts prefer giving both parents joint legal and joint physical custody. This does not mean necessarily that the children will be with each parent exactly 50 percent of the time. Such an arrangement means a substantial sharing of time, rights and duties in decision making regarding the children.
- Joint physical custody: This refers to how frequently the kids see each parent. The logistics of joint physical custody could involve alternate weekends, alternate holidays, one week here or there, and other tailored plans.
- Joint legal custody: This means the parents have equal access to the decision-making power regarding the children. Both parents have the right to see school and medical records and have a voice in deciding extracurricular activities, religious education and other important decisions.
OUR ROLE IN YOUR CHILD CUSTODY CASE
As a family law lawyer, our role is to represent your best interests as a parent, while achieving a solution that meets the best interests of your children. We will help you develop parenting time or visitation schedules that work best for your family. When problems surface, we assist you in resolving them, whether that includes seeking a modification or defending against one.
Each custody issue is unique and decisions are based on the individual circumstances. We help mothers, fathers, grandparents and other family members learn their custody and visitation rights and what to expect from the process. We encourage settlement, but are ready to litigate any issue that cannot be resolved.
